Death toll in Indonesia earthquake rises to 777

PADANG, Indonesia -- Rescue workers pulled victims, some screaming in pain, from the heavy rubble of buildings felled by a powerful earthquake that killed at least 777 people. The death toll was still expected to rise.

The brunt of Wednesday's 7.6-magnitude earthquake, which originated in the sea off Sumatra island, appeared to have been borne by the city of Padang, where a government official said most the dead came from.

The region was jolted by another powerful earthquake Thursday morning, causing damage but no reported fatalities.

More than 500 buildings including hotels, schools, hospitals and a mall were destroyed or damaged in Padang. Thousands of people were still believed to be trapped in the rubble, said Rustam Pakaya, head of the Health Ministry's crisis center. Workers used backhoes to shift debris.

The government official told The Associated Press that at least 777 people are confirmed to have died in the quake, with about 300 seriously injured. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media. He said most of the dead were in Padang.

"Oh God, help me! help me!" Friska Yuniwati, a 30-year-old woman, screamed in pain, as she was carried to an ambulance in downtown Padang. She had been pulled out minutes earlier from the rubble of a house, her face covered in bruises and eyes shut.

John Lee, a Singaporean guest at the flattened Maryani hotel, was pulled free by rescue workers who heard his cries for help. He had been trapped for 25 hours with a broken leg.

Padang's state-run Djamil Hospital was overwhelmed by the influx of victims and families. Dozens of injured people were being treated under tents outside the hospital, which was itself partly damaged.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono pledged to do "everything we can" to help the victims.

"Let's not underestimate (the disaster). Let's be prepared for the worst," Yudhoyono said in Jakarta before flying to Padang, a coastal city of 900,000 and capital of West Sumatra province.

A total of 531 people were confirmed dead and 440 were seriously injured, the Social Affairs Ministry's crisis center said. UNICEF said tens of thousands of people had been made homeless, one third of them children.

"The needs of thousands of children are vast and urgent. They must have access to clean water, shelter," Angela Kearney, the U.N. body's Indonesian chief, said in a statement.

One focus for emergency workers was a collapsed 4-story concrete building in downtown Padang, where 30 children had been taking classes when the quake struck. Four students were found alive and six bodies were dug from the rubble. Dozens were missing, said Jamil, a volunteer. "It's getting very difficult now to find more victims," he said. source

French spiderman, Alain Robert, : scales Malaysia's Petronas Towers

Mr Robert, 47, scaled the 88-storey Tower 2, triumphantly unfurling a Malaysian flag as he stood on its 1,483ft pinnacle (452m) on the country's national day.

He took just over two hours to reach the top after setting off in darkness before dawn to avoid the security that had thwarted his previous bids.

But when he came down to the 80-floor viewing deck shortly after 7.30am he was apprehended by security and arrested.

Mr Robert is being held by police in Kuala Lumpur. He has not been charged but is being investigated for criminal trespass, which carries a maximum jail term of up to six months and a £521 fine.

"With due respect to Malaysia, I came to finish something," Mr Robert told Reuters before setting off. "You know, climbing the Petronas [Towers] all the way to the top is one of my dreams, maybe because I am having the motivation, maybe also I am a little bit stubborn." On his two previous attempts in 1998 and 2007 Mr Robert was seized by security guards when he reached the twin Petronas Towers' sixtieth floor, prompting secrecy this time.

It meant there were few spectators to witness his feat, though it was captured on video by a cameraman, Ee Wee Kiat, who was tipped off.

"He climbed using his bare hands and reached the top very fast as no security personnel noticed him or stopped him," said he cameraman.

The climber has scaled more than 80 tall buildings around the world, including London's Canary Wharf building, Paris Eiffel Tower, and New York's Empire State Building, always without ropes and has suffered several falls resulting in serious fractures.source

Malaysia confirms first case of A(H1N1) flu

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia on Friday confirmed its first case of the A(H1N1) flu, a 21-year-old student who recently returned from the United States.
A statement by the Health Ministry's director-general, Dr. Ismail Merican, said the young man was hospitalised on Thursday after suffering from fever, sore throat and body aches.
He had returned to Malaysia from the United States on Wednesday.
Tests confirmed that he was infected with the A(H1N1) virus, the statement said. He is receiving anti-viral treatment and is in stable condition, it said.
Ismail said the ministry was in touch with his family members to ensure that he did not infect them, but they have not been placed under quarantine.
He also urged all passengers on the Malaysia Airlines flight from Newark on Wednesday to contact the ministry.
Ismail said the public has no reason to panic as his department was taking steps to protect public health.
Globally, 70 people have died of swine flu, 64 of them in Mexico where the virus originated. Four deaths have been reported in the US, one in Canada and one in Costa Rica.
According to the World Health Organisation, some 6,672 people in 33 countries are confirmed to be suffering from the disease.
The WHO estimates that up to 2 billion doses of swine flu vaccine could be produced every year, though the first batches wouldn't be available for four to six months, AP reported
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a man from Bukit Mertajam held under observation at the isolation ward of the Penang Hospital has been declared free of Influenza A (H1N1).
"We just got a report that the blood test on the 26-year-old man was negative," State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said when contacted by Bernama Friday.
A test on a sample of his blood had been sent to Kuala Lumpur.
The man was kept for observation Thursday after he was found to have fever and symptoms similar to those of Influenza A (H1N1) on his return from the United States.
Two weeks ago, a New Zealand tourist was admitted to the isolation ward of the hospital for suspected Influenza A (H1N1) but a blood test also showed up negative. - Bernama 15 May 2009

Siti Nurhaliza

Namakan saja.

Sebarang pertanyaan, bolehlah menghubungi talian 03-2693 9233 sambungan 8023/8017.

Spitting Cobras' Sharp-Shooting Secrets

Spitting cobras spew blinding venom toward the eyes and face of victims with surprising accuracy, and now researchers know how they do it.

Venom spitting -- a defense mechanism only -- is a two-part process that's part muscle and part like a baseball pitcher psyching out batters before winding up before a throw, indicates a new study published in the latest issue of Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

"Since the venom can cover a distance of over 6.5 feet, and the snakes appear to be very accurate, it is presumed to be a good deterrent," said Bruce Young, a biologist at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and lead author of the study.

For the study, Young and colleagues Melissa Boetig and Guido Westhoff analyzed adult, captive specimens of the red spitting cobra, the black-neck spitting cobra and the black-and-white spitting cobra. Source
